Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can restore teeth that are broken, worn, weakened, or significantly damaged by decay. A crown covers and protects the visible portion of a tooth, helping restore its shape, strength, appearance, and function.

At Saifee Family Dentistry in Spring, TX, Dr. Alibhai and our team take a careful, personalized approach to crown treatment. We begin with a thorough evaluation, explain your options clearly, and create a treatment plan based on your oral health, needs, and schedule.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over a damaged tooth. It is designed to strengthen the remaining tooth structure while restoring a natural shape and comfortable bite.

A crown may be recommended when:

  • A tooth is cracked or broken
  • A large filling no longer provides enough support
  • A tooth has significant decay or wear
  • A tooth has undergone root canal therapy
  • Additional strength and protection are needed

For teeth that are visible when you smile, appearance and color match are important considerations. For back teeth, strength and durability may be a greater priority. Dr. Alibhai will discuss the available options and help determine what is appropriate for your tooth.

How Do I Know If I Need a Dental Crown?

The best way to determine whether you need a crown is through a dental examination. Some damaged teeth cause pain or sensitivity, while others may have cracks or decay that are difficult to see without imaging.

At Saifee Family Dentistry, we may use Digital X-rays and an Intraoral Camera to evaluate the tooth more closely. An Intraoral Scanner can capture a detailed digital model of your teeth for treatment planning.

When additional evaluation of the roots, bone, or surrounding structures is clinically appropriate, a CBCT Scanner may also be used.

Your evaluation may include:

  • A visual examination of the tooth
  • A bite and function check
  • Digital X-rays, when indicated
  • Intraoral images
  • Digital scanning for precise records
  • CBCT imaging when additional 3D information is needed

These tools help us assess the condition of the tooth and determine whether a crown or a more conservative treatment is appropriate.

What Happens During a Dental Crown Procedure?

A dental crown procedure typically begins with numbing the area around the tooth to keep you comfortable during treatment.

Dr. Alibhai then removes damaged or decayed portions of the tooth and carefully shapes the remaining structure to make room for the crown. We use an Intraoral Scanner to capture a digital impression of your tooth and surrounding teeth, eliminating the need for traditional putty impressions in many cases.

Depending on your treatment plan, a temporary crown may be placed while a dental laboratory creates the final restoration.

When your permanent crown is ready, we check its fit, shape, appearance, and how it comes together with the opposing teeth. Necessary adjustments are made before the crown is securely placed.

Before you leave, our team will review care instructions and answer any questions about your new restoration.

What Are the Benefits of a Dental Crown?

A properly designed crown can help protect a weakened tooth and restore normal function.

Potential benefits include:

  • Strengthening and protecting damaged tooth structure
  • Restoring the shape of a broken or worn tooth
  • Improving chewing function
  • Improving the appearance of a damaged tooth
  • Supporting a tooth after certain dental procedures
  • Helping preserve a natural tooth that can still be restored

Our goal is to create a restoration that feels comfortable, functions properly, and blends naturally with your smile.

Does Getting a Crown Hurt?

Your tooth is numbed before it is prepared for a crown, which helps keep the procedure comfortable. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity or soreness after treatment, especially around the gums or when biting.

This discomfort often improves as the area settles. If you experience persistent pain, sensitivity, or an uncomfortable bite, contact our office so we can evaluate the crown and make any necessary adjustments.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns can last for many years, but their lifespan varies from person to person. The crown material, your oral hygiene, your bite, and habits such as teeth grinding can all affect how long a restoration lasts.

Regular dental exams are also important because the natural tooth beneath the crown can still develop decay, particularly near the edge of the restoration.

How Should I Care for a Dental Crown?

A crowned tooth still requires regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental care.

To help protect your crown:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss carefully around the crown every day
  • Avoid chewing ice and other extremely hard objects
  • Wear a mouthguard if you grind or clench your teeth
  • Use appropriate protection during contact sports
  • Keep up with routine dental exams and cleanings

Contact our office if your crown feels loose, your bite feels different, or you develop ongoing discomfort.

Crown vs. Filling: What Is the Difference?

A filling repairs a specific damaged or decayed portion of a tooth. A crown covers a much larger part of the visible portion of the tooth and is often recommended when the remaining tooth structure needs additional protection and support.

If the damage is relatively small, a filling may be all that is necessary. In other cases, an onlay may provide a more conservative option than a full crown.

Dr. Alibhai will evaluate how much healthy tooth structure remains before recommending treatment.

When Might a Crown Not Be the Best Option?

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown.

For a smaller area of decay or damage, a filling or onlay may be appropriate. If a tooth is too severely damaged to support a predictable restoration, other treatment options may need to be considered.

When appropriate, Dr. Alibhai will explain the alternatives and discuss factors such as the condition of the tooth, your overall oral health, treatment timeline, and budget.

Our goal is to preserve healthy tooth structure whenever possible while choosing a treatment that provides dependable function.
