Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth, support a bridge, or anchor a full-arch restoration. We use modern imaging and digital technology to carefully plan treatment and explain each step before moving forward.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post placed in the jawbone. As the area heals, the implant bonds with the surrounding bone to create a stable foundation for a restoration.

Once healing is complete, an abutment connects the implant to a custom crown, bridge, or other restoration.

Dental implant treatment typically includes three main stages:

  • Evaluation and treatment planning
  • Implant placement and healing
  • Placement of the final restoration

At Saifee Family Dentistry, we may use a CBCT scanner to evaluate bone structure and an intraoral scanner to capture detailed digital impressions. These tools help us plan implant placement and design restorations that fit comfortably and blend naturally with nearby teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants may be an option if you have a missing tooth or a tooth that cannot be predictably restored.

They can provide a durable, long-term tooth replacement option while allowing neighboring healthy teeth to remain intact. Implants can also help preserve jawbone in areas where teeth have been lost.

You may want to consider dental implants if:

  • You want to replace one or more missing teeth
  • You want to avoid altering healthy neighboring teeth for a traditional bridge
  • You want greater stability when chewing
  • You are looking for a fixed alternative to some removable tooth replacement options

Before recommending treatment, your dentist will evaluate your bite, bone support, oral health, medical history, and treatment goals. Some patients may need additional procedures before implant placement, depending on their individual needs.

What Types of Dental Implant Restorations Are Available?

The right implant solution depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your mouth, and your long-term goals.

Single Tooth Implants

A single dental implant can replace one missing tooth without relying on neighboring teeth for support. Once restored with a custom crown, the implant is designed to look and function much like a natural tooth.

Implant-Supported Bridges

When several teeth are missing in the same area, an implant-supported bridge may be used. Instead of placing an implant for every missing tooth, strategically positioned implants can support multiple replacement teeth.

All-On-X Full-Arch Restorations

For patients missing most or all of their teeth, Dr. Alibhai may discuss an All-On-X-style restoration. This approach uses multiple dental implants to support a fixed full-arch replacement of teeth.

Each option has different considerations for cost, healing, maintenance, and treatment time. We review the advantages and limitations of each approach so you can make an informed decision.

What Happens During Dental Implant Treatment?

Your dental implant process begins with a comprehensive evaluation. This may include dental X-rays, a CBCT scan, and digital impressions from an intraoral scanner.

These records help us evaluate bone, spacing, bite relationships, and the ideal position for the implant and restoration.

During implant placement, local anesthesia is used to keep the treatment area comfortable. When appropriate, we may use precise planning and surgical guides to help position the implant for proper function and appearance.

After placement, the implant needs time to heal and integrate with the jawbone. Follow-up visits allow our team to monitor healing and prepare the area for the final restoration.

Once the implant is ready, the custom crown, bridge, or full-arch restoration is completed.

Does Getting a Dental Implant Hurt?

Local anesthesia is used during implant placement to help control discomfort during the procedure.

After treatment, some soreness, swelling, or tenderness is normal. The amount of discomfort varies depending on the number of implants placed, whether additional procedures were needed, and your individual healing response.

Our team provides detailed aftercare instructions so you know what to expect and how to stay comfortable during recovery.

How Long Does Dental Implant Recovery Take?

Healing time varies from patient to patient. After straightforward implant placement, many patients are able to return to normal daily activities within a few days.

However, the implant itself may need several weeks or months to fully integrate with the jawbone before the final restoration is placed.

During early recovery, we may recommend:

  • Resting and limiting strenuous activity for about 48 hours
  • Using ice packs as directed to help control swelling
  • Taking recommended pain relief as needed
  • Eating softer foods while the area is tender
  • Following all cleaning and home care instructions

Patients who need extractions, bone grafting, multiple implants, or full-arch treatment may have a different recovery timeline.

Will I Need a Bone Graft Before a Dental Implant?

Not every patient needs bone grafting.

A dental implant needs enough healthy bone for proper support. If bone has been lost because of long-term tooth loss, gum disease, infection, or other factors, additional treatment may be recommended before or during implant placement.

A CBCT scan can help your dentist evaluate the available bone and determine whether grafting should be part of your treatment plan.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are designed as a long-term tooth replacement option, but their longevity depends on several factors.

Good oral hygiene, routine dental visits, a healthy bite, and proper care of the surrounding gum tissue all contribute to long-term implant health.

At home, we will show you how to clean around your implant crown, bridge, or restoration. Depending on the type of restoration, this may include specific flossing techniques, interdental cleaners, or other hygiene tools.

Routine visits at Saifee Family Dentistry allow us to monitor the implant, surrounding bone, gums, bite, and restoration so potential problems can be identified early.

Dental Implants vs. Traditional Bridges

Dental implants and traditional bridges can both replace missing teeth, but they work differently.

A traditional bridge typically relies on neighboring teeth for support. Those teeth may need to be reshaped to hold the bridge.

A dental implant is supported directly by the jawbone and does not require the same alteration of adjacent healthy teeth.

The best option depends on your oral health, bone support, treatment goals, timeline, and budget. Dr. Alibhai can explain how the options compare based on your specific situation.
